Large print, small bed: preparing a multi-plate 3MF order

When one build plate is not enough, split or arrange the job across plates and keep the whole order together in one sliced file.

A multi-plate 3MF keeps several physical print plates in one project. It works for a large model cut into printable sections, a kit whose pieces need different layouts, or a batch that does not fit on one build plate. Slice every plate, export them together, and we can keep the complete set in one order.

“Multi-plate” does not mean the plates run at the same time. Each plate is still a separate physical print. The benefit is that the files, quote, payment and order state stay together.

When to use more than one plate

A single model is larger than the build area

If an object cannot fit the compatible build volume at the intended scale, it must be divided into pieces that each fit. Bambu Lab's official large-file guide covers cutting an object in Bambu Studio and adding connector features before arranging the pieces for printing.

Cutting is a design decision, not an automatic service adjustment. Decide where seams are acceptable, how the sections will align, and how you will assemble them. Keep joints away from critical details, leave access for finishing, and test an uncertain connector before committing to a long set. We print the toolpaths you submit; we do not redesign the joint after upload.

A kit or batch needs more room

You can also spread separate objects across plates without cutting any of them. This is useful when each plate has a cleaner layout, when tall and flat pieces need different orientations, or when a complete batch exceeds one plate. Give every required object a plate and remove accidental duplicates before slicing.

Prepare the project plate by plate

  1. Check scale first. Confirm the finished dimensions before cutting. Scaling separate pieces later can change the joint fit or make sections inconsistent.
  2. Make every piece fit its plate. No object may cross the printable boundary. Rotate and arrange deliberately, leaving the spacing your slicer requires.
  3. Keep the set understandable. Use meaningful plate names when the slicer supports them, and arrange numbered or matching sections in a clear order.
  4. Review material slots. Confirm the intended material on every plate. A slot used on one plate and not another should still map to the material you expect.
  5. Slice all plates. Inspect each preview rather than judging only the combined summary. Look for unsupported starts, missing small features, unexpected colour changes and plates with very different time or material totals.

Bambu Studio is built around a project-based 3MF workflow and lists multi-plate support as a core feature. The 3MF format itself is a package format for manufacturing data, documented in the 3MF Consortium specification suite. Bambu Studio's sliced export adds the application-specific toolpaths and supporting data for the plates in that project.

Export one sliced file with every plate

After all plates finish slicing, choose File → Export → Export all sliced file. This is different from saving the project and different from exporting only the plate currently on screen. The result should contain the sliced data for the complete project.

How we turn it into a plate-block order

One valid multi-plate sliced upload creates one job for each plate. Those plate jobs share a group and one customer order. The block is quoted together, paid in one checkout, and cancelled together when a cancellation is still available under our terms. We do not make you repeat checkout for each physical plate.

Each plate retains its own sliced file, print time, material use and place in the sequence. The plates print separately in plate order. Completing plate one does not mark the whole order complete; every plate in the block must reach its terminal state.

For accounting, the order-level charges are recorded on the first plate, but they apply only once to the combined block. The remaining plates add their own material and machine-time amounts without repeating those order-level charges. This is why a correctly grouped export is preferable to placing several unrelated uploads when the plates belong to one set.

Compatibility still applies to every plate

A multi-plate file is not a promise that every material, colour count or printer setting can run. The quote flow parses every plate and gates selected stock plus enabled raw and multi-material paths, but it does not certify the printer profile, nozzle, plate type, or build-area fit.

This matters most when different plates use different material slots or when one plate has requirements the others do not. Multi-material printing proceeds only when a complete eligible configuration is available; it is not enabled merely because the 3MF stores several colours. Do not rely on server-side auto-slicing to repair a partly sliced production file. Slice and inspect the whole set yourself, then let the upload report whether it is eligible.

Control the cost before export

Multiple plates do not automatically make a project expensive. The quote follows the summed material and machine time, plus the order-level charges that apply once. The useful question is whether each plate contains necessary toolpaths.

  • Remove duplicate or forgotten objects from every plate.
  • Compare orientations for support use and time, but do not weaken a joint simply to save material.
  • Keep tiny test pieces separate from the final batch until their fit is confirmed.
  • Balance convenience against risk: a packed plate can save setup, but one failed plate can affect more pieces.

Final multi-plate checklist

  • Every required section or object appears exactly once.
  • Every object fits its plate at the final scale.
  • Cut joints and assembly order have been checked by the designer.
  • Material assignments are correct on every plate.
  • All plates have been sliced and previewed.
  • The all-plates sliced export—not a project save—is uploaded.
  • The quote shows the expected plate count and combined totals.
