A hollow display piece may use little material yet occupy a machine all day. A compact, dense bracket can use plenty of material and time. Why “price per gram” is not the whole price

A per-gram number is easy to understand, but it hides machine occupancy. Imagine two parts that both use 100 g. One is a broad, simple shape printed with thicker layers. The other is tall, detailed, and covered in small features. Their material cost may match while their machine times differ substantially.

The reverse happens too. Extra walls and dense infill can increase grams without increasing the outside dimensions. Supports add both material and time, then must be removed. This is why a quote based on the slicer's grams and hours is more informative than a photo or rough measurement.

A single cable clip may take only minutes and a few grams, but there is still order handling and machine setup. If you need several, place them on one plate where practical. That can make the effective cost per piece more sensible without changing the part.

A display model can be time-heavy

A functional part can be material-heavy

More walls and the right orientation often matter more than blindly raising infill. Do not weaken a load-bearing part just to chase the lowest quote. Change one slicer setting at a time, reslice, then compare both the estimate and the preview.

How to compare a library with a local print service

Toronto Public Library currently lists 3D printing at $0.15 per gram, with a $0.15 minimum. That is a useful public option, but it is not a like-for-like commercial quote.
